Final Exam Study Guide

1. Explain how to get to the server drives and your folder
My Computer, when it opens up you double click server drives from the desktop
they should come up then you go to jstudents on 'akinspubserver' Go to photojournalism choose your period,
and look the folder with your name on it.
2. Explain how we use blogger.com in this class
Each Student In This Class Has To Have A Blog On Blogger.com To Publish Their Work And So the teacher can be able to check and grade our work.
3. Explain the process of creating a pinhole camera
Well First You need to cover the inside of your camera and the lid  entirely with black . Then you cut out a square on your pinhole camera ( big enough that your index finger can fit). then you cut out some aluminum foil and tape it to the pinhole camera from the inside.Once that is done with a needle you make a small hole. Then you need to make the flap to cover the small square on your oatmeal can!
4. Explain how the pinhole camera works and how the image is transferred to the paper inside
Well You Insert Photographic paper inside the camera ready to capture light (must be done in a dark room, otherwise your photographic paper would be ruined)

5. Know how to define and explain the 10 rules of composition, these 10 rules will be a MAJOR portion of the final and you better know how to recognize these rules, explain these rules and show me you understand them:
5a.  Rule of thirds
5b. Balancing Elements
5c. Leading Lines
5d. Symmetry and Patterns (repetition)
5e. Viewpoint
5f. Background/simplicity
5g. Create depth
5h. Framing
5i. Cropping
5j. Mergers and avoiding them
6. Explain how action and emotion impact a photograph
7. Explain how a photo can "tell a story"
8. Explain what the word "multimedia" means and share some examples of how we have seen them in class (on the blog)
9. Know how to correctly write a caption. I HIGHLY suggest you rewrite the rules on your blog and find at least 2 photos on the internet, post them on your blog and write correct captions for them. This will be a MAJOR portion of the exam as well.
10. Explain how "strong action" verbs enhance a caption
11. Explain how ethics come into play in regards to photojournalism and compare and contrast this with fashion photography. You really need to get the idea that changing photos to fit a need or to make something look like something else is VERY unacceptable in photojournalism.
12. Explain the difference between a portrait and a self portrait.
13. Explain what characteristics of a good portrait are.
14. Explain what the major differences are between newspaper and yearbook.

Definitions you are responsible for (I highly recommend you post these on your blog with the definitions and make sure they are correct, many of the ones you posted on your blog previously were INCORRECT. All definitions need to relate directly to photojournalism. Example: many of you defined burning as "pain that feels hot as if it were on fire" , when the correct answer is "burning- increases the exposure to areas of the print that should be darker."):

1. Aperture
2. Shutter
3. Exposure
4. F-stop
5. Single lens reflex
6. Negative
7. Positive
8. Contact sheet
9. Agitation
10. Enlarger
11. Stop bath
12. Fixer
13. Safe light
14. Burning
15. Dodging.

Good Luck and take this seriously!!!

Abandoned Theme Parks

1. Tell me which amusement park featured in the two articles that you would like to visit and take your camera along and what about that park made you want to go there. Write at least a paragraph.
The Amusement park that really caught my attention was Takakanonuma Greenland, Hobara Japan
I guess it caused me great empathy but also great curiosity like i want to go and visit this park.
It looks so old and abandoned the trees are so grown and it seems like the amusement park might
collapse down any minute.

3. Think of at least FIVE other unusual places you think would be of interest to photographers. List them.
  1. Rainforest
  2.  Haunted Houses
  3. Abandoned Hospital
  4. Abandoned Schools
  5. Any Place Where Myths Are Told!
  6. Old Construction Site
4. Use google or another search engine to research ONE of your five places and see if anyone has already started documenting that place. If you find that someone has already started - post at least one photo of their work.

5. Write a paragraph about why you think that it would be fun to document that location. Tell me what interests you about that place and what kind of photos you could expect to take there.

I would like to go and take pictures of any kind of abandoned place. This place really catches my attention because it looks like lots of time has passed since they abandoned it. I dont neccesarily think it would be fun but more to it, I think it would be very exciting and thrilling.

6. Tell me what it would take for you to go and take photos at your location. What would you need as far as equipment goes, travel plans, expenses you might encounter and what laws you would have to take into consideration to take photos at your spot.

Well I Think if i just go it would be considered tresspassing so i need to get permision of course i would need food a camera maybe even more help i would also need a lot of courage.

My First Print

.She is in class with some cube in her hands analyzing it and fixing to write it down
in the paper at her left.
She seems well prepared and very focused on her project

1.) Is anything in sharp focus?
Not Really Its actually kind of blury but you can see what she is doing and everything
that surrounds her.
2.) Is there good contrast? (Look for the blacks and whites in the photo)?
I think there is good contrast in this picture.
3.) Are all the rules followed? (Is the photo candid? Does the subject fill the frame? Does the photo contain action? Does it follow composition rules? Does it show "academics"?)
Yes This photo does its more of an over the shoulder and they show her playing with what seems some cubes.

Ethics in Fashion Photography.

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
They cover all the blemishes on her face they put on a lot of make up and
on the computer they make her neck longer and her eyes bigger they change her hair also.
2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
Well i think its ok in this case its for a product and well its not so bad but i guess in some way it is since
lots of people will be"tricked" Into buying these products without knowing that the girl in the picture is
really very different.
3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?
Yes if it be for bigger causes like cheating in a contest or something like that but
otherwise i guess they're just  trying to persuade people into buying their product.
4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
Maybe fixing her blemishes but completely changing her appereance its wrong in my eyes.
5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
Well fashion photography is more of the next new trend a lot of photographers catching pictures
of these models and publishing them i think photojournalism could be based on fashion (only catching
photos of models in fashion clothing)
6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?
well every picture you take has a meaning to the photographer and well its up to the photographer
to either leave it the way it was or just changing it up for sometimes good or ambitious reasons.

Negatives Evaluation

1. From looking at your negatives, how many of your photos do you think turned out well?
From Looking at my negatives, I think most of them came out well...some i dont like thought.

2. How many of your photos appear like they will not turn out well? Why do you think these photos did not turn out (Ex: Over/under exposed, not focused, bad composition)?
A Few didint come out how i expected it had bad composition which dissapointed me a lot since i really
was looking forward to making a print out of them.
3. Select the negative image that you think will turn out the best when it is printed. Why do you think this photo will turn out well?
I think it will turn out well since it fits well the academics preview theme and
because shes playing with some sort of cubes shes also in rule of thirds.
4. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) do you think are present in your best negative? What evidence can you provide from the appearance of the negative to support your answer?
Well in my best one i think the best negative one is that its in focus and i like her position.
5. What advanced composition techniques (Ex: rule of thirds, leading lines) that you have learned in class are present in your favorite negative?
I learned that it is really hard to get these captures at times mostly because of students not letting themselves.
but in mine im proud of it.

Photo Manipulation And Ethics

A. Summarize the main points of the story in 1-4 sentences.

B. Explain why you think this type of photo editing is unethical or acceptable.
I think this type of photo editing is unethical or acceptable it mostly depends on the cause whether good or bad.For example if a photo is manipulated to fix an error then the effect wont be so major and its acceptable but if its manipulated for a cause and somehow affects in a bad way a person then its not right and very unethical.

                                         -------------------------------------------------

A. Post the manipulation that you think was the most unethical, and explain why you think it was unethical.

I Thought this was a really bad one they edited the photo to make it seem like the soldier is
aiming at the man with the child in his hands but he really wasnt which can bring really
bad misunderstandings and consequences.
B. Post the manipulation that you consider the least unethical, and explain why you think it is not as bad as others.
I thought this wasnt that bad it doesnt hurt anyone to fix the photo just to
make her look ok.

Drug Cartels In Mexico

Well I think everything going on in mexico is very sad since my parents are from mexico and
well we would like to go back to visit some family but the situation is very risky and dangerous which stops us
from even thinking on setting foot on our hometown.I think its sad to kill other people that werent involved at all just for drugs ."The average ordinary resident of Juarez, their life is in danger every day." this quote is very sad since not even the average ordinary resident can walk around the corner without feeling scared.

I Like the last photo were the girl in the pink jacket comes out
she seems very hurt in deep thought and sad.It looks like shes been crying and is shes in the slideshow it must
be because something terrible happened to her or her family but eitherway her face expression
really causes empathy on the viewer.

Post Shoot Reflection

Answer the following questions on your blog about shooting your first real photojournalism assignment:

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get close, capture real moments, and capture action or emotion? Explain how you dealt with these challenges.
Well some of the students didint want to participate and others that volunteered were inmature and sometimes i had to wait for them to go back to working or showing emotion on their work.I tried to be patient with some in some classes they werent even doing anything so it really wasnt that easy.
2. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
On the light meter and the focus i was always trying to get the right moment to catch the moment like
in some rooms it would be too dark so id try to go close to a window or something.
3. Explain how you attempted to use at least one of the advanced composition techniques you learned in class while shooting.
Well i tried to get rule of thirds or simplicity but sometimes they would laugh or get nervous or my action or emotion wasnt so accurate.
4. What would you do differently the next time you shoot to improve your photographs?
I would try to be more patient and wait a little more to see if i could of gave my pictures more emotion.

Great Black And White Photographers Part 3

1)I Like The Way She Takes Her Photos Even If Their Black And White Their So Nice And Also I Like Her Imagination She Makes The Little Things Count.

I see a huge tree in the background its very much taller than her im guessing shes in some forest from the landscape behind the huge tree i see shes on top of a rock.
I smell flowers and plants from different varieties
I hear birds chirping and the wind blowing on the trees, i also hear animals running through the trees.
I taste the scent of the leaves salty and the dirt that accidently got into my mouth.
I feel the fresh breeze and the branches brushing through my arms as i walk. i feel the dirt blown
by the wind, in my face.
I see a lot of red a pretty woman centered in the middle of the picture everything else
is pretty much black it seems like shes sitting on what looks like a sofa.
I smell the perfume she is wearing mixed in with all the other
scents in the room where this photo took place.
I hear silence other than the dog barking outside and the kids playing right outside
this room
I taste the alluring vanilla air freshner in this room
I feel the warmth of this place luring me to its kindness

Pinhole Finale

1)Well First Of All Everything That Was On The Right Now Is On The Left.Anything Thea Was Black Is Now White And Whatever Was White Is Now Black.
2) Negative-noting an image in which the brightness values of the subject are reproduced so that the lightest areas are shown as the darkest.
---------------------------------------------
negative,  photographic image that reproduces the bright portions of thephotographed subject as dark and the dark parts as light areas. Negatives are usually formed on a transparent material, such as plastic or glass. Exposure of sensitized paper through the negative, done either by placing the negative and paper in close contact or by projecting the negative image onto the paper, reverses these tones and produces a positive photographic print.

Vocabulary & Inside Of A Camera

  • Macro Focusing-Applied To Zoom Lenses,Moves The Lens Group(s),Enabling The Lens To Focus Closer Then The Normal Focusing Distance From Close-Up Shooting.
  • Burst Mode - Digital and traditional film cameras with a burst mode (or Continuous Frame Capture) allow you to take a series - or burst - of images just by holding the shutter button down. Used often for high-speed and action shots.
  • Aberration-An optical defect in a lens causing it to form an image that is not sharp or that is distorted. This can take the shape of edge distortion or a lack of sharpness.
  • Angle of View-The area of a scene that a lens can cover. The focal length of the lens determines the angle of view. A wide-angle (short-focal-length) lens includes more of a scene than a standard (normal-focal-length) lens or telephoto (long-focal-length) lens. Angle of view is basically the angle at which light rays can pass through the lens to produce an image on the film.
  • Aperture-The aperture is the opening formed by the blades of the iris or diaphragm in the lens, through which light passes to expose the film. Aperture size is usually given in f-numbers, the larger the number, the smaller the opening. Aperture size together with shutter speed determine the amount of light falling on the film (exposure). The aperture is sometimes called the “stop".
  • Shutter-a mechanical device for opening and closing the aperture of a camera lens to expose film or the like.
  • Exposure-Light striking a sensitized material (film or paper emulsion).
  • Depth of Field-The range of acceptably sharp focus in front of and behind the distance the lens is focused on.
  • F-Stop-the setting of an adjustable lens aperture, as indicated by an f number.
  • Focal Length-The distance from the optical center of a lens to the image plane when the lens is focused to infinity

Pinhole Pictures I LIked/Disliked

I Loved This Photo Because Its So Beautiful, I LIke The Bridge And The Lake In The Background And The Color Of The Flowers Seems To Stand Out a lot. Its Not Blurry Which Makes it Pretty Plus Its In Color.Everything In This Picture Seems To Be Sharp. Its Not Warped.

I Dont Like This Picture Because Its Really weird. I cant Figure Out What It Is.There is No Action Or People. It Doesn't Seem Blurry Its Just Really Black I'm Guessing The Focus Is The Gray Thing In The Middle That I Dont Seem To Figure Out What It Is.It Doesnt Seem Warped.

Photos I Liked/Disliked

I Liked This Photo Because She Looks Funny In A Good Way Even Though Its A Little
Blurry I Think IS Still A Pretty Good Picture.

I Didint LIke How I took This Picture Maybe It Would Of Been
Good If I Didint Move It And Because Of That It Came OUt Really Blurry And
It Makes Her Look Different.

I Like This Photo Because It Like The Perfect Close Up.I Also Like The Fact
That She's Looking And Smiling. She Looks Kind Of Surprised.

I Disliked This Photo Because Its Just So Blurry And It Kind Of Makes Him Look Bad. Its A Late Shoot Since Hes Closing His Eyes.
